Liturgical recession during one of the Christmas Eve liturgies

CHRISTMAS CONCERT A SUCCESS!
120 people were in the pews on Sunday for the pre-Christmas concert in the “Sundays at Three” series, and what a joyful occasion it was! With an orchestra of 14 fine musicians, our choir of 25 men, women and children, and a professional actor, Daniel Chapman-Smith, doing readings, it was an afternoon which introduced the season with beauty, charm and joy. John Fraser was the master of ceremonies and Tom Fitches conducted from the grand piano. The highlight was the 20-minute presentation of John Rutter’s musical fable, Brother Heinrich’s Christmas, with narration from the pulpit, full orchestra and choir. This was the second of the five “Sundays at Three” concerts planned for this year. The next will be on February 10, 2008 when the talented and delightful Marion Singers conducted by Tony Browning present a diverse selection of sacred and secular a cappella choral music.

ADVENT LEARNING SERIES BEGINS
Are you feeling the season of preparing for Christmas busy and daunting – no time for rest and reflection? Join us for worship and conversational study Wednesday evenings at 7:00 pm in the chapel during the season of Advent (December 5, 12, and 19). Let Us Go Over to Bethlehem by James Moore will guide you in finding the faith, promise, peace and Christ of Christmas. Please pick up your copy of the study from Erin Marriott (Sundays) or from the office (during the week) and prepare for the first week by reading the first chap- ter. Hope to see you there!

ART SHOW COMING!
St. Clement’s 6 th Annual ACW Visual Art Show and Sale will occur on Saturday, December 1, 2007 from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. in Canon Nicholson Hall. In addition to a core of artists from this congregation who have participated faithfully over the last five years, several artists are joining the event for the first time. All have good quality original works for sale at sensible prices. The show will feature works in acrylics, oils, watercolours, and photography with subjects ranging from realistic to abstract. One artist new to us this year is presenting creative photography. The Show presentation is such that all oils are totally dry, framed, or if unframed then painted around the perimeter so that they are complete works as they are. All watercolours are matted on acid-free matts. Others are matted and framed and ready for hanging. A number of artists will have greeting cards reproduced from their original works. They are sold individually or in small packages. In 2002, the ACW initiated this Art Show and Sale as a means of developing community and friendship within the parish. Come to the show, bring along a friend or two, sample the refreshments, chat with the artists who will be present, and purchase some wonderful piece of art. The show has a jovial atmosphere in which to spend a few hours looking at and discussing creativity and art and their spiritual connection.
- Friday, November 23rd.

CALLING ALL MEN TO THE MEN'S BREAKFASTS!
If you are a member of the "other half" of the congregation and not had the opportunity to attend our men's breakfasts, I thought you might like to get filled in. We have had three wonderful speakers recently: Cam Finlay, Kevin Frank and Sean Mace. All three have spoken about the challenges and joys of their work and shared a little about the spiritual implications of what they do. All of us in attendance have been impressed by the professionalism, competence and faith of these men. Although working in very different fields, they are all highly successful and widely respected. They also have a common motivation at the heart of it all. The have been gifted by God with great ability. They have worked extremely hard to get where they are today. And they all seek to honour God in all that they undertake. The Next Men's Breakfast will be on Thursday, January 17th, when Don Morrison, the chief operating officer of Research In Motion (they make BlackBerries!) will be our guest speaker. All men of the parish and guests are invited and for the "other half" of the parish -- we'll keep you up to date!

COLLEGE FOR EXCELLENCE IN PREACHING - GREAT SUCCESS!
The Queen of the Apostles Retreat Centre in Mississauga was full of excitement, enthusiasm and hard work last week as 29 clergy from the Dioceses of Toronto, Niagara, Edmonton and Rupert's Land shared with and learned from Dr. Rhashell Hunter at the 2007 St Clement's College for Excellence in Preaching. They were all looking for renewal, stimulation and new ways to preach to the varied "congregations" found within each par- ish. The clergy shared prepared homilies, receiving feedback from their peers as well as from Dr. Hunter. Dr. Hunter spent time discussing "post modernism" and encouraging them to focus and experiment with a variety of new approaches. They watched and discussed videos of great preachers. Over meals and in the evenings, they discussed how helpful it had been when they worked in team ministries and had the opportunity to have peer input and exchange. Many acknowledged how little time in their training for the priesthood had been assigned to preaching. They praised St Clement's for offering this learning, renewal and sharing experience. Ask The Rev. David Montgomery, who attended as one of the participants, about his experience.

NEW!!! Listen to Dr. Hunter's sermon from November 4th! (RealPlayer or other MP3 playing software required.)

During its Centennial Celebrations in 1991, the Parish realized how blessed it had been in its succession of rectors with strong preaching skills. Mindful of this blessing and also of the responsibility to spread the Gospel, a capital fund was established to finance this College.

WORSHIP EVOLVES AT 9:15 SERVICE
Extract from the Pastoral message of The Rev'd. David Montgomery (see full text in the Clergy Notes link above). "In an ongoing attempt to worship in a way that is interesting and relevant, the 9:15 service is about to try some different ways of doing things, from now until Advent begins. The clergy will sit in the congregational pews, as members of the People of God. The Proclamation of the Word will focus on a Central Lectern, on the same level as the congregation, with readings from the amazing and provocative new biblical paraphrase, The Message. The Liturgy of the Eucharist will focus on a Holy Table in the centre of the chancel. The con- gregation will gather around it at the offertory. Since the time of the earliest Book of Common Prayer, Anglicans have experimented with different ways of worshipping. In fact, there has almost never been a time when Anglicans were not changing, mostly because beautiful and meaningful worship is something we hold so dear that we want to keep getting it better. And this is not just change for the sake of change; the Spirit of the Risen Christ continues to inspire us to try out new prayers, new songs and new ideas so that our Sunday experience keeps our eyes open, our minds alert, and our hearts alive. If you’ve never been to the 9:15 service, give it a try sometime over the next six weeks! Come to experience a Eucharistic celebration that is surprisingly, and deeply, Anglican."

CONVERSATIONS WITH GOD SERIES
During the months of July and August, a successful study series with Canon Harry Robinson was conducted after the Thursday 10 a.m. Eucharists. Parishioners met in the Reception Room for refreshments and dialogue about one of the conversations that Jesus had with his followers. The success of these dialogues has led to more this fall with a study of the letters sent by the Apostle John to the seven churches of Asia Minor. You will find the applications to our corporate life at St. Clement’s and to our own individual lives surprisingly relevant. Come and join this new learning series on Thursdays from 10:45 - 12:00 noon. Read more about it here and join in!
