Faith in Film » Movies and Popcorn

Welcome to films, faith and popcorn!

Every month church members, friends, family and neighbours from the community gather to view and discuss highly acclaimed films. The movies we show are usually not, as one might expect, explicitly religeous or spiritual. The main criterion in their selection is that they represent the best quality from around the world and that they touch on the basic issues common to the human condition. In the discussion that follows, we tackle the ethical and theological issues arising from their content.

There are many surprises as we discover images, metaphors, and concepts in secular films that echo traditional spirituality. Sin, forgiveness, redemption, salvation, resurrection and sacrament are themes that may be found in all films that have caught the public imagination.

Please feel free to join us. We meet the third Wednesday of every month at 7 pm, but dates are sometimes changed to accomodate other church activities. Check our Calendar for details.

Upcoming Faith in Film:

July 20 Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (2010)
If you haven’t read the books or seen any of the movies, come and find out what all the fuss is about. Harry Potter continues to fight evil in this first part of an epic finale to the award-winning series.

August 17 Of Gods and Men (2011)
Winner of the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival, this French movie tells the true story of Jesuit monks living in harmony with a largely Muslim population in Algiers—until seven of them were kidnapped and assassinated.

September 21 Avatar (2009)
A magical and spectacular sci-fi movie about the interaction of humans and aboriginals on the planet Pandora.  James Cameron’s break-though masterwork is the first really good 3D movie (though, sadly, we’ll be watching it on a standard 2D TV). It is the highest-grossing movie of all time!
